wow. beautiful. so much personality in that piece. i love the shot of your studio, by the way. looks like a productive space with a lot of good energy. 🙂
i'm sorry you shall miss pinkerton-bottom. he'll save some cute mews and sandpaper keeeesses for you when you get back. rest your soul up there in the north, you hear?
Being Nationally published is way over rated. I'll put it in terms of dollars as guys often do. I've written a piece on our business. If I had paid to publish it, it would've run $100,000. 4+ page spread in a Nationally Circulated Mag at $25,000 a page. We ran 6 other paid ads that year to compliment the edit…. Guess what….
It doesn't mean chit. My mother and grandma loved that her son was in a Walmart, 7-11, Borders, and every other gas station that littered the country. My friends said wow, and life went on. Funny thing is sales never increase and we tracked 'em like a hawk.
Nationally published means I can say "I'm a Naionally published editor"…. Nobody cares, but you/I.
The things that you're doing everyday, and the gals that follow you, carry way more weight that being "Published". If you need recognition then work on increasing your blog views. Were does your blog rank? Don't set yourself up for another disappointment by spending 2.5 months of your time for a single goal like being published. (PS. you are published, your blog is world wide.) If you haven't noticed, newspapers across the country are going out of business (Denvers out, NYT is loosing hundreds of thousands a month), your favorite magazines are no longer there, books are on Kindle. Printed media is on the way out along with CNN, ABC… Blogs and AM Radio are the new Media that matter…. And you rock the blog world. (Doesn't John rock the AM world in AZ. I think you'd be a great talk show host)
Don't put a lot of your efforts into being published…. If it happens then rock it, don't get carried away with thinking it's a "10", that would be setting yourself up for disappointment.

(My vote on the Degree thing is drop it and use the tuition $ to further your business. Everybody has a degree in today's world thus diluting it's weight and significance. You know Suzy has a degree in Arts right? What did she do with it…. Worked in the industry for 7rs, then started her own business and runs mine. Business owners are hot… Rock yours with the extra resources your putting twords a degree.)
…i've been digesting what Sean has written to you…to all of us…and I agree…
with everything he has to say…GREAT advice…with the exception of ONE…tidbit…
the degree…
& i say…GO FOR IT…
next to a birth certificate, marriage license & property deed…it's the next BEST piece of paper…to validate…to have…to frame…to file away…to know that it is all YOURS…handmade…pure heart & soul…
AND…for what's it's worth…
if you had a link…on your blog…for the purchase of YOUR book~to~be…
of your words…your stories…& your poetry…
of your sketches…your photos…& doodles too…
even ideas…and grocery lists…of silly things to do…
I"D BUY IN A HEART BEAT…because…i really dig you…&…EVERYTHING YOU DO…
but if you stopped blogging… well, really writing to me… & if you stopped smithing… well, really adorning me…
daily…
in your silver & stone…& your pure Prairie Soul…
my heart would be broken…BROKEN… you see…
& know that there are so many more…feeling …exactly like me…
Nancy McKay, that last comment, just so warm and lovely and sweet! (And I agree on the degree thing – it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with proving your worth as an artist, or even as an intelligent human being, but it is nice little piece of security that nobody can take away)
I have been following your blog for a while because I LOVE your writing. Love, love, love. I devour books, I hope to write, and I am so nourished by your spirit, your words. I hope you will write. I know you have gobs of book recommendations already but someday if you need encouragement for writing (AKA actually encouragement for life) then I think you will greatly enjoy Annie Dillard, The writing Life. Hilarious. Actually speaks probably to life as an artist too–all the solitariness, the deep world you have to enter into to find your soul speaking. And the grungyness of living on caffeine and never sleeping. Okay well just wanted to speak encouragement. And appreciation.

wow, beautiful, I don't know the fancy jewelry-artsy-talk for it, but I like that way of holding the stone in place.
