…that IS her papered name you know.
(thought her friends call her Piepie, Penny, Penny-Pie or Toots)
Well, she’s been through quite the ordeal.
While I was on my climbing trip last weekend she had a little accident. I didn’t want to alarm you, but while she and Farley were off gallivanting on the rocks something happened! I think she fell off a granite cliff into a cactus patch because she returned to me looking like a pin cushion…
…full of cactus spines with a bleeding nose and one eye swollen shut.
It was a Sunday and I couldn’t do much about her injuries since I was in the middle of nowhere. But I washed her face with clean water, removed the cactus prickles I could see and washed her eye and rubbed it free of horrid goobers with the palm of a clean hand, repeatedly, over the weekend. I had hoped that she would recover quickly on her own…with the aid of a healthy immune system.
But yesterday when I looked down at her face I noticed a cloud in her left eye. It looked like a small cataract of sorts. I decided to make an appointment with a new vet here in town (I have yet to find one I like).
So I took her in to see the dog doctor this afternoon (whom I like very much) and after all sorts of prodding, numbing, thermometers in butts, eye staining, poking around her inner and outer eyelid with a pair of tweezers and a few biscuits, I am happy to say that Plume’s Precocious Penelope Pie is healing just fine though she might always have a little smudge on her eye (who knows what the heck managed to get into it in the first palce).
I love her.
And she was so good at the vet clinic that they gave her a golden star on her forehead. She ran five miles with it there before nightfall, with Farley and I up in the hills. It’s still between her little smudgy eyes. I love that little dog. She’s tough as nails and tender to boot. A perfect combination, if you ask me.
She gets to sleep in my bed tonight. So does The Great White Beast.
Because when the man is away, the mice do play (plus there’s more room in bed
without him….).
Oh MY what a little trooper! Tell little miss Rhino-butt that I am wishing her well and for her to enjoy her time in mommy's bed for daddy will be home before she knows it 🙂
Woof woof.
Wanna Skype?
yesss
Aww, the doggie is precious.
cant you bring her next week?
i am dying to get to your place.
…well i surely can! i was planning on leaving her at a kennel but if you are alright with her coming, that she shall! just say the words!
Oh, poor little dear!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, little Pie Pie!
Brave and brav is she. (Brav–pronounced braahv–is German for good). The gold star becomes her.
Awwww….poor wee Penelope! Glad she's all right. People don't realize how serious a cactus 'injury' can be…and they can be 'very' serious to our animal pals and we mere mortals too!OH, and she gets to go on a road trip with you for some extra lovin'. Lucky girl! Puppy kisses to the wee one…(and by that I mean, drool-less ones)! hee hee
Very few animals can carry a precious schnoz like your Penelope. (I have a very large schnoz…)
Poor little button! Glad to hear your vet took great care of her and that she's on her way to being well.
Happy Snuggling!
A
my word! thank goodness your little penelope pie is ok. i love animals, but have a super soft spot for dogs 🙂 so glad all is well. she definitely is a cutie! lord knows dogs LOOOOOOVE the 'ole thermometer in the butt part of visiting the vet.
have a great vaca next week!
with love from baltimore,
lindsay
poor penny poo, hope she's feeling lots better! glad you found a good vet in town as well. give the doggy's noses kisses for me and tippy.
xo
Oh I hope she's on the road to recovery.. it makes my heart stop when our little 4 legged friends find themselves in harms way.. sending doggie kisses her way..
Awww…BIG hugs and sweet doggie kisses for Miss Pie! I'm so sorry to hear she had an accident but VERY glad to hear she is on her way to recovery!! She is the cutest little doxie I've ever seen (and I've seen some that are very adorable!). If she goes on vaca with you next week, hope you gals have a great time!!
ps. Pass some love to Farley too!

Dachshunds are resilient little buggers.. part of the tenacious personality methinks. Our dachshund (exactly the same as Penelope, they could have been twins).. developed glaucoma in his later years and had to have his right eye removed.. even after becoming a "pirate wienie" he was still the same little fearless dog.
I have a million wiener dog stories.. as I'm sure you do too..
Oh, the little baby….glad she is alright.
Glad she's alright 🙂 reminds me of my first dog, on a farm outside Kitchener … Got into a brawl TWISE with a porcupine – poor fellow.
Glad all is well and she is on the mend 🙂
What a wonderful story of companionship and love (as well as mice games). I'm sooo glad she's back to normal. Strong little creatures aren't they?
Karl and Bob send "Get well" wishes to Ms. P. Pie and condolences on the veterinary indignities but congrats on the gold star!
I attribute all my gray hairs…which are numbering quite a lot!!! – to pet hurts…
A thousand pardons from "us"…should have been to Ms. P.P.P. Pie…
Oh dear, poor Penelope! She is so lucky to have you and you her. My long lost cat Magic was such a tiny pint sized scrapper, he seemed to incur cat-bite-abscesses every other month. So often, that I lamented the absence of an "Introduction to cat veteranarianism" class at the local community college. Pets are such troopers when it comes to trauma.
Wishing her a speedy recovery!
xoxo
Oh dear little PiePie! She surely earned that gold star!
love the belt buckles on yr blog
Sweet little Pie. She looks so concerned and thoughtful in the pics. There's alot going on behind those eyes- it's like she knows we're all feeling for her. And that gold star- that's just too perfect! It must have given you such a tickle to see that little thing running around all evening with her gold star of courage! Glad she's going to be ok 🙂
By the way, it's the strangest thing…Last week you debuted your beautiful fawn necklance… and over the weekend I came across three sweet little fawns (see pics on my FB page :-)). This week you showed us poor little ill fated Gerald… and just now I spied the cutest little chipmunk darting around my patio sniffing at the strawberries- and I hardly EVER see chipmunks (I could count on one hand the number I've seen in the last 10 yrs). Coincidence? I don't think so! There is something truly magical about your world JSL. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Cy says that we should start a dog kennel, just so you can leave Farley and Pie with us when you go on vacation.
🙂
Whenever you're ready to raise a barn, you've got your crew.
D 🙂
…i've got one more " P " to add to the paper…
PRECIOUS…
Plume's Precocious & Precious Penelope Pie…
PS: word verification…plenesse…gotta add that 1 too!
…PS…speaking of Penelope Pie…is she wearing a
Silver PLume old soul…medallion…around her neck…?
hmmmm…PuCat would look soooo feral wearing one…hmmmm…
Any vet who gives gold stars is a keeper–sounds like you found a match for Farley and Penelope.
Glad to hear she's going to be okay…maybe she needs her own climbing harness?
Drop Farley off in San Diego on your way out…
I'm afraid you'll have to keep the ugly one on your voyage. Were friends and all, just not that good of friends… Keep the wiener, we'll feed Farlinator while your gone.
Oh yeh, I think Farley pushed her…
She probably deserved it too.
…and ship Pinkers with my button ring…
awwwwwwww poor pup! She's very brave. I've had cactus in me and they HURT! (I have 4 doggies, love doggies)
