First Snow

9000 feet
I was up at 9000 feet this afternoon with RW, crunching through the first snow of the season.  Right after RW snapped this image the wind blew me over.

Of course, I was crawling through the brush oohing and ahhing over the crystalline deposits of snow and ice on the grasses and wild flower stems (RW is a very patient man):
You know I’m going to recreate these minute pools of ice in a jewelry design.  Nothing can compare to the perfection of creation but darn it, I’m going to try.  I’ve been day dreaming and sketching since seeing these beautiful samples of winter up close.  They nearly stopped my heart in my chest.

The best details of the day:

A chipmunk transporting cache across the Mink Creek road — cheeks expanded four times their regular size, tail ramrod straight as it galloped across the pavement.

Wet leaves playing leapfrog on the sidewalk in front of the house.

That first creamy sip of my latte while I sat in a coffee shop this morning answering emails.

Penelope’s wee bottom bouncing through the snow on top of Scout Mountain.

That perfectly beautiful rose that rises up in my cheeks when I’ve been out in the cold and wind.

The heat pouring off my firebox out in the studio.  The closer I sit, the cozier things feel.  AND the view from my studio window — Kinport Peak has a light dusting of snow.  I can’t wait until my view from the bench is positively polar looking.

Autumn feels good on this soul, even if my fingers are cold.
Happy Monday to you all!
Life is so good.
xx

Post Script:
I do feel compelled to inform you of my current obsession
with Selkies.

    Oh my gosh-
those frozen branch photos are exquisite!!!
You make winter sound positively seductive!
However, I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't reach me quite yet. Still enjoying the greenery way too much!

I really enjoy your photography and looking forward to your personal jewelry interpretation of your icy surroundings. xo

Lovely, but too cold! We are cold and rainy here in the Pacific NW, with maybe snow coming in the mountains. Soooo not ready! Glad you are safe and warm by the fire.

Since you are obssessed with selkies, have you by chance seen The Secret of Roan Inish? If you haven't, you will like it….

  7. beth & cody says

Selkies… Have you read the "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon? There's some mention of selkies in that epic saga. Also page after page of details about the wonderousness of Scottish culture in general! Lovely book to curl up with next to a crackling fire on a snowy day.

  10. Or have you been watching Ondine?

  11. Tis the season for frozen fingers?
    Say it ain't so!

Your flare of red amongst that grey-blue… so-so great.

  12. No fair! You have snow, and I'm stuck here with warmish, yucky humid weather. I am ready for WOOL! and I am also sure that I will want and crave your icicles.

  13. p.s. The Secret of Roan Inish is one of my favorite movies!

I was dreading winter coming to Durango, Colorado until I read your post. Now I am actually starting to look forward to my own adventure in the first snow…

Its beautiful! and I cant wait to see what you turn it all into jewelry wise.

Also I am a bit traumatized by the sudden cold. Oh well, time to break out the coats!

  16. thewindhover says

what! I have always loved Selkies!

And how I wish for a morn I might wander outside and see and feel the first fall of snow. Snow. what a strange outlandish thing. Much like Selkies. But I love them both.

    And you xx

  17. Like some of the others, you have made me also excited for winter! If not the cold that I like (I am ALWAYS cold) it is seeing the snow alight on the branches and leaves, such a magical sight. For now, it is the end of October and still in the 70s. Enjoy the snow for all of us!

  18. "Nothing can compare to the perfection of creation but darn it, I'm going to try."

…Ah, but at its best–grounded in natural patterns, resonating with natural harmonies, pure, inspired–human creation can be very much an element of CREATION and thereby perfect and holy!

    Turn on, tune in!

    first snow here, too!
    can't wait for daylight: photos.
love to get up close and personal with little individual frost flakes.

[and, me too: selkies. i think that's why dachshunds always fascinate me: they look quite selkie….]

  21. kerin rose says

oh, Selkies!…you might like the film 'Ondine'…..!

Winter? Seductive? OF COURSE!!!! What is sexier than wearing 17 layers at once with a huge pair of insulated boots??? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I actually HATE summer clothing. I love to be bundled and swaddled in layers of wool and finely knitted and stitched apparel. Plus. It means I can wear 14 of my favorite things at once, instead of 2 or 3. DELIGHTFUL!!!

I haven't actually seen Roan Inish yet BUT I have it queued up next on Nexflix and it should be here tomorrow. I know it's going to antagonize and inflame my current obsession….you might be hearing about Selkies for a while…

YES. I have been watching and adoring Ondine…despite the fact that I somewhat loathe Colin Farrell…I only really like him when he plays a cowboy role and I think that's only ever happened once. But he's real swell in Ondine and I don't find myself gagging like I usually do when I'm in his cinematic presence. I'm reading over this paragraph and it sounds mean. Oh well.

Outlander!!! You're the third person to mention this series to me (other mentions came via email)!!! I am expecting a copy but I might have to jump the gun and run out to nab one for myself. Pronto. Especially if there are Selkies involved.

Oh my. You really ARE one of the smartest ladies I know. xx

Dachshunds DO look like Selkies!!! You're right! Oh good grief. Next time Penelope goes swimming I'm going to have to record it for you all….she is my baby Selkie.

And thank GOD. Dala is sending me a male Selkie to help eat up all my pumpkins. Sometimes I'm blessed beyond words….actually….I'm always blessed beyond words. Who am I kidding?!

THESE COMMENTS HAVE BEEN A DELIGHT TO READ! I WISH I COULD MAIL YOU ALL AN ICICLE.

heee…I feel the same way about Ol' Colin…suppose I am mean then too! 🙂

  27. I am also fascinated with the stories of Selkies. When we were on our honeymoon I found a copy of this book and bought it. It is really for young adults, but I still love it!

You CAN mail us icicles. They'll just arrive in a different form.

How DID Selkies come to pique your interest? Just curious.

The current word up for verification is "twool". Dunno if it means anything, but it's most amusing to utter.

I became interested in Selkies whilst watching Ondine. From there I started doing some interwebular research on the folklore surrounding them. Not only are they fascinating but they're kind of weird — which, obviously, appeals to me.

    Lyns: Sparkly, indeed. x

Mmm, I'm so excited for the first hints of snow. The winters are long up here, as you know, but this week things have been WARM. Nearly 20 degrees? Silly!

Anyhow, enjoying the sun as much as I can <3 Take care!
