…I took a bath. And it was magnificent.
The un-bathrom here is nearly a bathroom once more. RW is installing our new toilet today and our new sink later this week (as soon as the new pedestal arrives, the original was warped). I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have indoor bathroom plumbing once more. I cannot tell you how relaxing my last two evenings have been, here in my home, after long work days in front of a fiery furnace out in my studio. RW is the best handyman I know. I deeply appreciate the work of his hands.
Do any of you have claw foot tubs, or old slipper tubs that you love to lounge in? Aren’t they the most comfortable bathing situations with their deeply sloping forms and smooth porcelain? They’re just the most romantic tubs imaginable. I’m convinced.
Also, let me tell you, I have such an appreciation for my tub and the fact that it is enameled cast iron! Can you imagine enameling such a huge piece of metal and firing it so perfectly? So flawlessly?
Wowee! I’m inspired to go BIG with my enameling. I’m going to enamel a house! Or perhaps a petit bateau. Which brings me to my final point, sometimes when I’m taking a bath, I pretend I’m an owl or a pussy cat out at sea in my pea green boat and the wind is whistling on the edges of the tiny sail I’ve hoisted…and over there, cast white against blue, the breeze is holding an albatross aloft.
Bubbles, lavender essential oil and Epsom salts,
The Plume
I just swooned out loud. Everyone looked at me. I'm so excited for you!! Congrats on your ALMOST completed bathroom remodel 🙂 It looks fantastic!!
<3<3
I hope you enjoyed your scrub a dub dub!
I can't wait to experience that tub for myself. Maybe I'll never leave! That would cause quite a problem now wouldn't it?!
I am so so envious of that bathtub! I do no take baths often…because I am 5'10", with the worlds widest hips and I can't even sprawl out!
When I worked at a factory, I once worked in the powdercoat section where they coated washing machine cabinets with the porcelain powder…it was neat to watch them come out all glossy.
Lovely, lovely. The only time I ever had a clawfoot tub was back in 1st year university, and it was in BAD shape and wasn't comfortable to take a bath in at all… but my gosh, it was a romantic notion!
Long time lurker, first time commenting. And you had me at 'bath', today. I, too, am a bathoholic. When we house sat, I was spoiled by the clawfoot tub (having grown up in Saskatchewan in a moderate size city (PA) in a modern bungalow). When we returned to the Maritimes and decided to buy a house, my first order of business was to check out the tub. I was not settling for a too-short, too-shallow, too-blah tub.
Our house has a wonderful tub, one deep enough I can submerge fully (no knees sticking out when my shoulders are covered, no cold upper chest when the legs are submerged. And deep? I feel as if I'm in a small pool. It's not a clawfoot 🙁 but it is perfect for me – epsom salts, olive oil and honey perfect.
Love your blog!
so excited for you! I totally agree with you about the cast iron tub, I could go on quite a long ramble about how much I love them, how they are the best vessel for bathing and how much I miss having one (as in my first apt ever a long time ago)! Enjoy your beautiful ship, give a wave hello to the mermaiden for me!
Sigh, I am so jealous of your tub! The one I have hear is barely a tub, more of an after thought for something to catch shower water in.
sigh…
RW, consider me IMPRESSED!!
Lovley! You are lucky to have an RW!
We have a clawfoot tub in our upstairs bathroom and I am *so* in love with it. I literally fall asleep every time I take a bath. That has never happened in any other tub. It cradles me so perfectly. I'm powerless against its sleep-inducing wiles.
Loveliness.
I do have an enameled cast iron tub. A bit older than yours. A little worn on the bottom.
And frightfully cold in the winter, until you fill it up with glorious hot water!!
I dream of one day having a claw foot tub. ::sigh::
I am so jealous of that claw footed beauty. I may have to buy you some bath salts and send them your way to enjoy.

I love your tub, especially its feet, and I may have been in one eons ago…maybe in a different country? maybe in Belgium, ?? I like your imaginations…I would do the same if I were floating in a tub! Glad you are enameling, I love enamels too! xo
Oooo. That crisp white looks delicious.
SOooooo Sooo Sooooo very and utterly jealous! Congrats!
When the Plume sets sail with the Owl and the Pussycat…Poseidon calms the seas and orders a magnificent sunset or oranges, pinks, yellows and golds…perhaps a touch of heaven blue.
Happy Bathing Goddess!
Oh my, what a dreamy bath tub. I adore baths. As a single mother, my nightly soaks in the bath is one of my favorite parts of the day. The scents of the bath salts rising with the steam of the hot water….Now only if I had such an amazing tub 😉
Swoon….
impressive.
very.
kudos to mister krapfel.
sail on, j-feather!!
xx
Love your photos.
Yipeee- you finally have your bathroom back with fabulous tub! xo
I had one too in my old apartment. I miss it too much. They're so nice in the winter months!
We're lucky- most apartments, duplexes or cottages around core area of my city are older and have retained their original cachet with high ceilings, original sculpted moldings, hardwood floors and claw tubs. And- are still totally affordable even as a student.
GASP. If I didn't love you I'd hate you from sheer jealousy. As it is – I am joyful on your behalf. I lurvs me a bath to my nape.
Beautiful! I live in an old house with a clawfoot tub, however it only has an odd tubular contraption to make it a shower and no nozzle for a bath…sigh. Were it my own house that would be the first to go. Will just live vicariously through you on this one! (Or perhaps get the handiman boyfriend to do a little low-budget magic…)
"I'm going to enamel a house!"…OH! HA HA HA Hahaaa hahaha!!! That's wonderful!
LOVE clawfoots. (Clawfeets?) Would fain have one someday. I too think of the owl and the pussycat in such circumstances.
x
Pristine, just absolutely divine!
Kudos, RW!

Ahh…yay you!
My favorite part of going home for a visit: nearly drowning myself in Mum's gorgeous deep tub. Alas, no feet, but has a real rubber plug (what is it with these drain stopper thingies—that don't actually 'stop' anything—and overflow drains over here???) and no overflow drain, so can soak in water up to my chin!
Your photos reminded me of another bathing beauty (bun included!), by one of my favorite quilling artists:

I once had a old enamel tub. Over a stolen fire box from an abandonded campground. It was hidden in the forest near the rustic mountain hostel I took care of. It was an arduous affair: filling it with water from the creek, waiting for it to heat up, sneaking away from the ice climbers and other assorted clientel and don't ever forget to put the wood plank and a towel down before you sit down (ouch ouch! it was above the a wood stove!)But it was my kind of heaven. I miss that tub.
Those ingredients = perfect bath!!
You are blessed!
Enjoy your soaks! I had to laugh at the Owl & The Pussycat reference 🙂 Did you know that Kohler has residencies at it's manufacturing plant? I heard an artist lecture on her time there and she showed slides of the plant…she was the only woman in there amongst all these burly old grumpy men, and got to be around all this incredible HUGE manufacturing equipment. It sounded amazing. I've enameled a bowl form about 4×5" and let me tell you….NOT easy. Infuriating. Triumphant to finish, yes, but during the process, it was very touch and go. But now I'm just rambling 😀
OH my!!!!! Lucky lady Plume!
My mouth was agape at the first and second picture. That floor is amazing! And the clawfoot legs? Wow!
Lucky lucky Plume!! One day i wish to offer MY lady this kind of service.
Well worth the wait! Enjoy!
the luxury bathroom … imagine that you are enjoying it.
I visit you but I do not write as often … sorry … you should know that your jewelry is wonderful and I enjoy reading every word you write.
Have a lovely weekend
lots of love
My goodness!
Thank you all SO MUCH for these amazing comments!
I thoroughly enjoyed your clawfoot tub stories — amazing that so many of you have had the pleasure of soaking in one (or the displeasure). HA HA!!!
I'm loving mine so much.
Seriously. I've been taking two baths a day. A short one in the morning and a leisurely soak in the evenings. I'm spoilt.
If you ever swing by, you're welcome to have a soak yourself!
xx
Lovely.
The whole bit. The words, the photos, the bath, the hair knot, the idea of being the owl…
xo Plume…

I may be the one oddball who cannot relax in the bath…my mind instantly goes 100 miles an hour and i try to slow it down by doing crosswords…but i love baths nonetheless. 🙂
