I’ve got that living feeling….

[My oh my, Plumbelina grew up fast!  She’s horse sized now.  Giddy up!]
We’ve been socked in here all week long — low clouds and the steady threat of snow.  Last night, the world finally turned white again, and the snow hasn’t stopped for an entire day!  How lucky am I?  So, this afternoon I decided faire du ski, up the mountain from the house.  The snow was gentle; I quietly swooped through it, poling strongly and skating smoothly with the dogs chasing me down hill and tangling themselves in my skis when I found myself creeping up the hilly sections.  I felt in touch with the Norwegian portion of my heritage.  Blond hair in the wind.  Salt water sparsely running so carefully down the small of my back…like the sea at the feet of fjords…

I know I tend to wax (eloquently?) on and on about the seasons, and whichever I happen to be experiencing is deemed my favorite and the most thrilling of all, but seriously, I love winter.  It might sound strange, but something about it reminds me of the ocean, especially when it’s snowing.  The white acts as an insulator and sound seems to travel a fraction of the distance, all is so tremendously quiet.  My cheeks light up with roses and I’ve got that living feeling.
I’m adrift.  I don’t belong.
I’m enveloped, I’m unfolding.

So many of you love summer, I’m sure.  One of my very best friends and I agree that we feel most vivacious in the autumn months, I love the rebirth of spring, I adore elements of the summer months (like gardening and fishing) but winter, winter feels the very best of all on my soul.  I try the white on and it fits like a glove.  How about you?  Would you rather sweat or shiver?  Would you rather lay in the sun or coast through the snows?

There’s something so romantic about seeing the sky come down and settle in a smooth blanket on the surface of the earth.  I want to roll it back, prop it up on sticks and make a quiet fort of it.  There beneath the snow there is blue light, the swing of pendulums, the constant shuffle of crystal lattices waving like sea kelp in currents.

I’m off to whip up a pizza for the brilliant Mister and I
(oh, I love him so…).
Have yourselves a marvelous weekend, dear chickapeeps!
xx

  1. Oh I wish we got real snow in Seattle! How DO you get your gray day photos to look so nice and fresh and blue?

  2. I also love winter so. Snowshoeing, sledding, I even prefer horseback riding in the winter compared to summer. Even the occassional kayak trip, though my husband thinks me crazy. Enjoy the weekend!

  3. Love the feeling of freedom I get from the sun and wind on my skin and enjoying a tall glass of freshly juiced greens to cool off!

But- I still love seeing the snowflakes pile up on my window sill while a big snow storm is brewing outside.

I smile each time you profess your deep love for winter. xo

  4. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous photos! It looks quite magical.

I too love Winter (I love all the seasons in their own special way), and especially love that quietness that comes with being in a snow filled place (and the hot chocolates that come once your safely back indoors!)

  5. To live in that beautiful place would be a dream come true. I drove through there once when i was a teenager and even then in my disaffected young state i knew i was some place special. Lucky Plume indeed.

  6. I love that pic of you and Plumbelina that throws your proportions off!

About winter: it sure is lovely. But here in the north it tends to be a little too long.. By February we want to be done with it already. And I'm so waiting for my apple trees to bloom!

But I just got to experience even fiercer winter weather. In St Petersburg. I'll post pics soon.

Oh your winter looks nice. However I am a sun weather queen, love the feel of the heat soaking into my skin, the sounds of the waves lapping at the shore, for me sitting on the beach at a quiet time and staring out into the ocean gives me such a feeling of complete utter peace and tranquility like my own personal little life is totally alright in that simple moment of time.

I know you already know of my unending love of winter, but I have to say, I could not survive without all 4 seasons. I feel so lucky to be able to experience their magnificence! But all in all, i really do love winter…
    Enjoy your swooshing!
    xoxo

  9. I love autumn. It's always been my favorite with it's crisp air and brilliant colors. I love the smell of oncoming snow and the fact I can wear every bit of cozy clothes I stock up on over the year (I love sweaters).

After living nearly a decade in Phoenix I can safely say that I would choose a chilly morning over a bright promise of a hot day. You can stack as many layers on as you want to get warm but you can only take off so much.

I agree with the winter quiet. When it's coupled with that soft night-time glow of a snowstorm it all become rather ethereal. I love that aspect of winter.

Wow, I haven't thought so positively of winter in weeks. Thanks!

  10. winter is magical, but i do love spring with the new life peeking out. Fall is a close second with everything settling in for hibernation.

winter though is a lovely blanket that brings beauty to everything. I am happy to see it go after freezing my butt off and seeing my electric bill!

As I must make tediously obvious with every second post of my own, Winter is hard on me. So is the summer, when the direction, distraction, and drive of academia is put on hold. And of course, Spring and Fall are so busy and wet…

Truth be told, I don't think I have given any of the seasons a proper chance in a long, long time. What I want is to see and experience the joys and comforts of each one. Perhaps, in a few years, I will declare a winner.

  12. love winter. *love* it.

  13. OOOh the sweet seasons! You do make winter look so beautiful in the pictures! I'm a northerner transplanted to the south by my husbands' work, and I miss the snow so much we travel once a year so I can get my ski fix. (Downhill for me, though I started in cross country)

  14. This moment i love the winter more than summer ….. i posted it on my blog Because too amazeing : )

  15. I absolutely adore winter. Wrapping myself in my winter clothes, being outside until I can't feel my nose, then coming back inside and relishing the warmth as it creeps softly done to my bones.
Sadly, living in Redding, I do not get enough snow as I would like to have. When it snowed this last Friday night, I danced about the house trying to look out each window at the same time.
