The Maid

Well good grief.
I made a maid.
RW and I have been watching Downton Abbey recently and the maids wear such precious little uniforms with a dash of lace poking out the tops of their collars, I’ve been sighing all over the maid attire on that little show.  I’ve been inspired.

Then I saw this bib necklace yesterday and I simply gave into the marvelous whim of concocting something of similar spirit.

I’ve taken a burly swath of copper, pierced it, forged and formed it, enameled it and strung it on delicate oxidized sterling chain.
 It wears big and bold.
It’s kind of cute.

On the topic of maids, I reckon these two things:

1.  I am my own maid.  I perform the white glove test on my heart and soul…only I know the cleaning that needs to be done there.  Likewise, you are your own maid, responsible for the cleanliness of your heart, spirit, mind and soul.  Let’s all stay as tidy as possible.  Everything is so much more beautiful that way.

2.  I’m considering getting a maid this summer.  Currently, RW cleans most of the house…because that’s just how it works around here.  Dans le summer, when RW is away for 5 full months, I just don’t have time to tend to this home of mine with a burgeoning garden, three dogs, one cat, three chickens, a studio and a small business to run…not to mention all the traveling I do between the here and theres.  I’m thinking, for my own sanity, this maid might get a maid.

Do you have a housekeeper pop in from time to time?
Is it worth it?

LOVE Downton Abbey! I like to have it on just as background ambience while I work, and yes I agree, their uniforms are too cute.

    That necklace is a beauty!

  2. I'd love to have a maid. I can't really justify having one though. I AM hiring a window washer though. Hard water spotting and living on the second story make this a necessity!

  3. Love love love this piece!!
    Swoonaroonie!!

  4. Wild, wacky and fun necklace!

Yes, you need help around the Gables!
    *Don't even hesitate*

I adore cooking. I have a feeling most jewelry designers do. Metal smithing is akin to cooking.
Shopping, planning, preparing, the chemistry of the recipe, add a dash of this and a dash of that, enjoy for a few minutes and then time to clean up the whole mess!
    haha.

All that to say… Cooking is time consuming!
I don't have maid service but send me a chef to prepare even just 1 meal a week and I'd be grateful forever!

  5. Oh, the purples and greens in Downton Abbey!

  6. Yes, house cleaners are totally worth it. When I was gainfully employed we had them come once a week (or every two, I can't remember right now). Once I get my small business up and earning re-employing cleaners will be high on the list! Although, keep in mind, they probably won't do as good a job as you or RW.

Ooh la la, my doily loving soul adores this piece to bits!

And I'd LOVE to have a housekeeper, but for now it'll just have to be me!

mister fox and i share the duties. sometimes. mostly i do the housework. this is a three-story house we're talkin' about here….
i was raised to "clean" once a week. so that's what i do. i simply cannot sit and relax on my days off if the house is in disarray.

yes, by all means, with robert gone for months on end, you should have someone help you. although i DO find it easier to keep the house spotless without a man in it. [smile] but i DO miss my man when he is gone!

    p.s. j'adore the maid necklace.
does wearing it make you want to run about on your tippy-toes with a feather duster in your hand??

GREAT series and am so glad it's continuing.

My Mom has a service come in twice a month and she's on a fixed income. If you're busy and like a clean house it's WONDERFUL.

  10. Isn't it the prettiest show?!?!?! Love you! and yes, get extra help with the house when you need it!

When we reach the income level and can afford a housekeeper, that is the FIRST thing we are splurging on! Definitely. And I know of some good ones here in Portland.

Do it! You will be eternally grateful you did, and realistically, it is well well WELL worth the little bit of money.

  12. What a great idea!<3 It´s kind of strange to see originally something soft being made from material like copper. Love it.

What a whimsical necklace! Love the way you spot and recreate phenomena seemingly incongruous with metal.

Yes, housecleaning help can be a godsend, but a good (careful, thorough) helper is hard to find; even the best, as firepan pointed out, won't do quite the job RW or you do. Still, her (or his!) help can take a huge edge off the work.

  15. If I had a necklace like that I could clean for hours..! As it is now though we have house cleaners coming once a week. Mostly because we live two families together and that causes a lot of dirt… I love having the help, but as someone else said, they don't clean as good as you would yourself. Go for it, I say!

i must say, after watching a few episodes of "downton abbey"….you REALLY nailed that maid necklace!
looks JUST LIKE the lace 'round the neck of the maids' outfits!
