New Girl

After searching for the better part of a year, we added a third to our fleet! This is Coulee. She’s double registered as a Kentucky Mountain Horse and a Racking Horse and we like her very much. She was on the other side of Idaho with a good family but not quite the right family for her — they had horses but were not…horsemen…if you know what I mean.

Before that, she was in Kentucky mostly starved to death by the breeders who raised her. We brought her home because she’s extremely fast, smooth, energetic, hardworking, surefooted, tough, and sweet. She has a couple behavior issues which are a result of being on pasture for years without any work to do and being ridden by nervous humans. The more we ride her, the more she settles in, and the less she employs those old behavior patterns of hers. She requires a confident rider to truly shine. She’s such an interesting little mare. Best of all, we took her elk hunting and she went very well, even while we were passing through falling burned timber in high winds, and she helped pack out two bulls for us. She’s a star.

Welcome home, Coulee!

Is it beautiful where you are?

It is beautiful here.

Some things I’ve wanted to share with you:

This Meateater podcast episode on the topic of Bristol Bay and why the proposed Pebble Mine can never be allowed.

The Wild Salmon Box offered by the wonderful Salmon Sisters. The discount code thenoisyplume will grant you $25 off your purchase of a wild fish box that will arrive at your front door frozen and packaged in manageable serving portions. This discount code is good until November 16th. I’ve been looking to add some sort of wild seafood subscription to our chest freezers here and this fish is such a great option. This salmon is caught by the Salmon Sisters fishing fleet and sold directly to those who are unlucky enough to not be able to catch their own wild Alaskan salmon!!! Farm direct, ranch direct, fisherman direct is always the best way to procure fresh food while helping farmers, ranchers, and fisherman keep as much as their hard earned money as possible. Eliminate the middle man, eat wild salmon, and be well!

Ane Brun as the leaves turn crimson and twirl to the ground. Her voice is as ancient as the seasons. I love her version of All My Tears.

Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher — for any fans of the incredible work of Ed Curtis.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople — Kiwi movies are always quirky and special. This film has a sad beginning but there are many lighthearted, hilarious moments along the trail.

If you want to read about some great ladies (I’m lucky to call a few of them my friends) check out Katie Marchetti’s Women of the West column on the Modern Huntsman website. By the way, Volume SIX is on the way! I finished edits on the final draft of my story this morning, as a matter of fact. Hang on to your hats!

The West Against Itself — food for thought.

SHIPPING QUANDARY

Howdy Folks,

This is a short and sweet post to let you know I am changing a couple things with jewelry shipments. I am having a hell of a time with missing packages, jewelry shipments being returned to me for no reason at all, packages being delivered to the wrong address, packages being delivered BUT NOT ACTUALLY BEING DELIVERED. The issue is not on the sending end but the receiving end — my rural post office is awesome and is getting the job done.

I used to have a package go missing once a year or once every two years. Right now I’m having one go missing once a week. It’s bonkers. I replace (at no cost to you) or refund missing shipments not because missing shipments are my fault (they aren’t) but simply because I feel this is the kind of customer service you deserve. I make myself vulnerable by telling you this is my policy because there are bad apples out there who would exploit me for this and tell me they’ve not received a shipment that they have in fact received…but I want you to know you can always trust that I will do my very best to make things right and to take care of my customers and patrons to the best of my abilities even if that means I don’t get paid at the end of the day. When you choose to support me, you come first.

For years I have shipped your orders via priority mail here in the USA and since the US post office seems to be having some serious issues right now I am going to add “signature required” to your packages from now on so that you actually have to personally sign for these shipments. It will cost me more to send your orders out with this service and I will be covering the extra $4 to send these packages to you in this manner.

If you do not have your mail delivered to your front door I realize this will cause you to have to go in to your local post office to sign for you order and for that, I apologize. Your time is precious. I respect that. But I have to find a way to get these shipments to you safely so I’m going to try this and see if it helps!

For higher priced one of a kind pieces I will be forced to switch over to UPS or FedEx shipping which will be a real headache for me since my nearest shippers for both these companies are more than an hour drive from the farm. I’ve lost confidence and faith in the US postal service for the time being and I want your orders to be properly insured and shipped with a carrier I can trust.

If you have any other ideas for me please holler in the comment section of this post!
